The game is good, but could be better - Ronin: The Last Samurai

I would like to share my frustrated expectations with a recent game that was added to my games catalog, I'm talking about Ronin: The Last Samurai available for mobile devices, the proposal initially presented through a video was almost half of the different game presented (It is not new that this happens) and I will leave my points of observations in topics below.

  • Graphic and Sound Quality
  • Gameplay

Before delving further into the subject I already want to let you know as I would like to have been alerted about the energy system, I hate it in mobile games as it limits you to buying options if you need to do something and you are out of energy, or wait until the other day, I don't care about paying to remove ads, but having ads and still this system forcing you to pay, just brings me closer to the uninstall button.

Graphic and Sound Quality

I'm a big fan of any visual art in games, in specific pixel art since it requires special attention to be able to represent for those who are watching what the creator wants you to feel, from even the smallest details like the environment itself, in terms of character movement.

Although for the time I've been playing the scenario seems to be the same from the beginning, it seems to be something hand-drawn, but with the use of something more digital like the traits of the samurai character and his enemies, highlight for the attack visual effects specials, cuts and blood, although it is little used since combat is not limited to that.

In terms of sound quality, the game does not disappoint either, although the background music is an infinite loop of traditional feudal music from the beginning of the menu to the end of the fight, the characters have their narration in their attacks while on some occasions you talk to the NPCs present in the scenario and are also very detailed in this regard.

I didn't play long enough to know if the music would change after passing a certain amount of stages but I have my doubts about that since not even in the boss battle anything has changed.

Gameplay

Even with the possibility of moving around the map and just trying the famous "Hack-and-slash" and attacking any opponent that is within reach, it requires a moment of strategy and calm. At times when you can parry/dodge blows if you manage to hit the exact moment of your opponent's attack and other times when they are using their skills you can't defend, just dodge or attack at the right time.

This even seems easy to say like that, until you are confronted by snipers and opponents with spears, while you still have to pay attention to the opponent in front of you attacking you, the game is not being frantic but at the same time it is not so still , it's something balanced and I like that a lot.

One criticism is that maybe it could be used more if it didn't follow the style short levels or pre-selected enemies which makes for those who are playing something cloying for the energy cost and having to balance it doesn't help, it has a system of quests and a list of equipment and skills for you to improve your samurai, besides that after some stages you get some kind of "temporary upgrade" that can benefit some parts of the fight like attack, speed and your maximum health among others.

The biggest challenge here is that your health is not restored every fight (except if you manage to kill an opponent and he drops a health orb, which will restore it).

After a little research I found that recently the game has received a chapter update, which can be an interesting addition to the game, among those already reported by the developers is also: new sound effects, new weapons including a bow usable by the character and the mentioned chapter here it is called The Oni Forest which is related to the theme of ancient demons in the samurai era.

The game is available for devices with the Android version and also for devices with the Iphone version.

"I only know one true Samurai, and his name is Yasuo, the rest are just cheap copies..."
